25: “八里公路”, Eason song that motivates me

This song helps me get my butt in gear, but I have no idea what it’s about.

An optimistic, upbeat melody with a video that…tells me nothing about the song. Is this video…from a TV show? A movie? Maybe the song was used in a soundtrack? So basically, because it’s not in Mandarin, I have little idea what the actual content of the song is, but I respond to the semi-wistful melody and upbeat BPM.

The name translates as “8 [Mile] Highway”, which just adds another layer of “Huh?” to the mix.

It’s probably obvious by now that I listen to songs in several languages, most that I don’t actually speak, and love them regardless of their meaning. I respond to their musicality, their tone, melody, atmosphere. Sometimes I’m able to create my own meaning around them, my own associations, memories.

Sometimes I’m better off not knowing what the lyrics are because it colors a song I’d adored with shades I was blissfully unaware of. Like explicit racial pride, us over them, in some Asian music that’s absent in a lot of modern American music that I listen to, but just fine and dandy in cultures that shamelessly strive for monoethnicity.

Like the accusations that my favorite Korean rapper, Swings, is anti-American, anti-gay and anti- a whole bunch of stuff that I support. Like my own personal race/gender combo. A damn good reason not to learn Korean, I tell ya.
